What is modesty?
Google defines it as a behaviour, manner, or appearance intended to avoid impropriety or indecency.
But I believe it is much more than dressing or behaving a certain way; it has become more than that; thanks to the media we all indulge in, its shinning a much more positive light, thanks to the modern beauty and fashion bloggers on our social platforms; that are able to show audiences that the word ‘modesty’ it self is much more than a google definition. It has become a trend these days; which has its cons and pros.
Cons that dressing modest has become a fashion trend that people are unaware why we even do it in the first place; as in whats the main purpose? Pros that more women particularly are getting comfortable and releasing that we are more than showing our skin/body to the world to gain attraction or sense of approval from our followers on a platform or even in our real world, that less is more these days; which I believe is bringing more women self love and empowerment.
I have to admit I have not always been a person that dressed in a modest way; until I started to see bloggers starting to embrace it more, its a domino effect, you see someone you follow or look up to acting and dressing a certain way you feel as if its more accepted now; that you start to explore that side of it; but dressing modest is not about that.
For many modest fashion is culture and religion. Many of my friends that dresses modest have said to me that they dress modest because it makes them feel more closer to their faith.
Nish.uncut a Podcast Producer stated that dressing modest makes her feel that dressing this way gives her a sense of respect from people and won’t give her liberties for showing more skin; as if they owe her something for showing off her body. She also stated that she feels that her
Tasneem Ahmed an Youtube personality has stated that dressing modest reflects on your character, your actions but also of your own self and morales. She also stated that dressing modest gives her the power in who she can show her self to which also gives her the power in allowing others to focus on her character as opposed to her aesthetics.
As a christian Indian women; at a young age I was told to dress a certain way too; especially when attending church or community gatherings, where my mother would tell me to dress more appropriate and respectful. Which is a word that was repetitive in many conversations about this topic amongst people. Respect seems to be the main base within this topic; whether you choose to dress modest for respect from individuals or whether you dress modest to respect your culture or faith; respect seems to be the main key.
I believe that anyone can dress modest; whether its for their personal outlook on how they wish to be viewed or even how they feel within by dressing a certain why.
We’re all here to empower and support each other no matter our differences in beliefs and culture; if a person wishes to dress a certain way we must as a community embrace it; modest or not, were all here for girl power am I right?
